The Board was set for a delightful weekend at 7th City Collectables. There was a palpable sense of excitement in the air ahead of this auspicious occasion. With 24 attendees encouraged to bring thematic armies of 650points it was sure to be a hell of a ride.
As games got underway it was clear that the level of theme and artistry was on another level. With custom rules for a Faramir's Charge list, a Road to Rivendell display board of near unsurpassed beauty and a Pirate Ship filled with outstanding (and outlandish) converted corsairs it's easy to say people had tried especially hard for this return to the GBHL.
With four games on day one the competitive crop was soon whittled into halves, with Jasmine Tetley and Thomas Wagg ranked as the top two, and Jason Hounslow and Aaron Pullen on table two. From Day two these names would become familiar to all in the room after their endless waltzing around tables 1, 2 & 3.
But just outside that four were George and his Hobbit horde, and Dan with his Mumak Warleader (could there be two more opposite armies vying for space at the top tables?!). With Lords of Battle, and two objective based games left to play, you'd probably put your money on the hobbits to edge themselves onto the podium but alas that wasn't to be. The hobbits ended the day just off the podium in fourth place (probably a good thing; how do you fit 70 hobbits onto one podium!?).
But after a few Games, Thomas Wagg and his Theodred's guard also fell by the wayside after being leapfrogged by Aaron and his Corsairs.
The day ended with Aaron's gorgeous corsair army topping the podium in First place and with Jasmine Tetley and her Goroth-led Morannon Horde in second... But wait!
Dan Entwistle was in third place with his Mumak Warleader and Haradrim cavalry, but after the votes were tallied, he landed himself with two extra Tournament Points for his sporting behaviour, leapfrogging Jasmine at the last hurdle and securing himself second place and bumping her into third.
But the true winners here were all those who came and enjoyed the tourney - with tournaments once again becoming a rarity, it was a reminder of the camaraderie, and friendly competition involved in GBHL events.
It may well the last for a while, but those who remember the Rings of Men will return to the tables once more, I hope you join us.
