At the start of the year I wrote a piece challenging you to do something new for the hobby this year. Whether that was take on a project you never planned to do, or to start something that would really challenge you - it could be anything! I thought it was time to share a few projects people have been up to inspire more creativity!
First, let's start with an amazing feat of painting and conversion.
Joshua Crosby's 'Easterling Kataphrakt with Bow' is the 'Most Engaged With' post the GBHL Facebook page had in the last month. It's not hard to see why:
He says "One of the best things about battle companies is that it can generate characters like this, who could never exist otherwise."
Amazing work Joshua, also worth noting the excellent photography skills!
Next up is Corentin Deruyck, whose 'work-in-progress' shots of his home made gaming table have whetted the appetites of many who can't wait to see the end result.
On the more competitive side of things Warhammer World GT winner Jasmine Tetley has been delving into complex mathematics in the league by analysing which are the most successful factions in the Great British Hobbit League since the new edition of the game dropped.
The documents - NAY, TOMES - are an impressive feat of analysis closer in breadth to dissertations than traditional blogs or articles. They're well worth perusing, even if to understand the intelligence and dedication to the game some of our community are blessed with.
Here is Jasmine's analysis of the GBHL winners, and here is her analysis of which factions are best at 500pt limits.
Another painter creating truly outstanding work which has blown minds is Ben Fowlie, known as middle.earth.miniatures on instagram, his work on The Fellowship combined numerous techniques delivered with great precision for an outstanding result.
He says: "From the outset I wanted to see just how far I could push my painting capabilites, incorporating new ideas and techniques such as semi-NMM (I used a mix of metallic and non-metallic paints for the metals), freehand work and moving hue from (generally) colder shadows to warmer highlights."
He adds that he'd never have dreamt of painting this well 6 months ago - giving hope to us all!
"It's interesting that as your ability improves so to does the strictness with which you critically evaluate your painting," he says. "I suppose it's what drives the constant evolution of your painting journey, Bilbo really was correct when he composed the road goes ever on!"
We'll come to the wonderful world of YouTube soon. But first it's worth shouting out one of the hosts of SBG's podcasts. Dan Collister, of Out of the Frying Pan Podcast fame, has made a name for himself as one of the most accomplished painters in the SBG arena. His Morannon Orc Army was recently featured on Warhammer TV's hobby roundup section, looking at it below, you can see why!
Well he's going one step further and raffling off one of his amazingly painted armies. His Lothlorien army, which is spittle-drippingly good, is being given away to one lucky person. He's asking people to donate money to CALM, the mental health charity, and will give the army as a prize to one donor. It's an extremely generous offer, raising money for an incredible cause. A true hobby hero, Find out more, and donate, here.
There are some amazing content creators in the world of SBG at the moment, we truly are blessed. That could be the amazing videos Zorpazorp is pumping out, like this ambitious Minas Tirith Project; or the sheer volume of awesome battle reports from Conquest Creations; or incredible insight and analysis into army lists and factions delivered by The Green Dragon Podcast & An Unexpected Podcast. All are amazing, and should be bowed down to for their continued, consistent and creative work.
But I want to highlight the work from Battle Streams in Middle earth's Damian and Tom M, the Fantasy Fellowship campaign of battle reports they're creating are among the most creatively and thematically immersive videos I've seen yet. It also helps that the community effort gone into them adds a little sparkle of fun for many. If you haven't watched them do check them out.
Elsewhere on Youtube, Battle Camper is doing something... Well, he's doing something for sure. His exploration of the hills near Glastonbury whilst painting Eomer in the back of a camper van could be the most Niche hobby video ever. But, it's brought with laugh out loud humour and a fantastic strain of self deprecation. If you haven't seen it, do give it a watch, he's one to keep an eye on for the future.
Finally, it wouldn't be fair of me to talk of other's hobby progress without at least proving I've been working on painting for the last few months as well. I suggested to people to take on a big project, so that's exactly what I've done. I'm working on a project which sees me build and paint 1000pts of Ruffians in anticipation of Throne of Skulls happening in December this year (fingers crossed...). The community is getting involved, by providing the ruffians which I'll paint, and coming up with delightful colour schemes for them. So Far I have Football Ruffians which I show you how I painted on the Battle Games in Middle Earth Youtube Channel, as well as showcasing them in an MESBG Battle Report in Bree. I also have some Cyberpunk Ruffians and Napoleonic Redcoat Ruffians on the way so keep an eye out if you want inspiration for creative ways of painting hundreds of models in different ways!
If you've enjoyed this post and are looking for more MESBG content, peruse the blog and keep an eye out for more Outrider Posts on the GBHL Facebook page.
