If you often see these blog posts as simply a haven for competitive talk about the game we all love them think again! This post we're looking at a hugely fluffy event down in Swindon. TO in charge is Tom Pattinson, and he sent us this dispatch:
"Last Sunday 12 teams descended on Atomic Cards Swindon for our first ever doubles event. We really wanted this event to focus more on fun friendly games rather than the usual competitive event with the same armies scrapping it out at the top tables. This was reflected in the rules pack with bonus points awarded throughout the event for coming in costumes and for thinking up witty team names. Fortunately for us this was fully embraced by our community and some fantastic costumes were on display throughout the event.
Ash and Jake from team “Men Of The Southwest” won the award for Best Costume with these real metal coats of chainmail and amazing weaponry.
A special mention must also go to “Beorn to be wild” for their inflatable Bear costumes which looked to be a nightmare to play in!
Not to be outdone by the costumes was some of the amazing hobbying on display in the best painted army competition.
John Partridge from team “Any Heroics” took home the prize for his beautiful Angmar army complete with light-up display board!
He was closely followed by Dan and Nat from “One does not simply ride into Mordor” with their Riders Of Theoden list featuring lots of clean lines, and a striking yellow and purple colour scheme.
That brings us nicely onto the games themselves. All teams played 3 games across the day with 800 point armies comprised of 2, 400 point lists. In third place was “The Welsh Hand Of Saruman” with a double ballista Assault On Helms Deep legendary legion. Scoring the most tournament points through the games but narrowly missing out on the top spot due to the bonus points from the hobby side of the day.
Narrowly pipping them on VP difference was team “Beorn To Be Wild” with their Beornings legendary legion, missing out on the top spot by a single point to “It’s Fun To Play Against, Honest” with their Rise Of The Necromancer legendary legion."
Thanks Tom, it sounds like a terrific event with some incredible effort gone into all aspects of the hobby - exactly what GBHL events are all about!
