October Tournament Roundup

As October comes to a close, we catch up on some league action before some huge tournaments on the horizon:

I'll start with Lincoln's premier hobbit event Lord of the Imps which returned for a sequel not long after its postponed event from last year.

The event saw just shy of 50 players competing for 100pts in the league, in a format rarely seen in competitive play. The event sees your leader's warband die on day one, leaving players the challenge of how to ensure their 700pt armies work on Day 1 and 2. And boy did players rise to that challenge. Storming into the lead was David Farmer, the only player to win all 7 of his games, who took a Mordor force led by the Tainted on Day 1 and the Cirith Ungol Legendary Legion on Day 2, he bested James Gilray in the final game on Top Table which forced the scotsmen into 5th (for more insight into this game and some thoughts about the tournament, check out this video). Meanwhile Sean Sproule and his Synthwave Uruk force (Lurtz's Scouts on Day 1, and Ugluk's on Day 2) crept into second place after winning 1 TP for Most Sporting (Alongside Joe Pettit and Stephen Macdonald). Nicky Myland came in third place with his Dwarven Force Led by Dain on Day 1 and Thror on day 2.

Also worth noting was the outstanding hobbying on Display, with Christopher Cooper winning best theme and board for his efforts providing a Shire board (complete with smoking chimney stacks) and Hobbit style snacks for all his opponents. It was Robert Burton however who came home with the popular vote for best painted with his GORGEOUS Mumak and Mahud force. This is his second win for Best Painted at the tournament so I couldn't help but ask for some insight into how both armies were Painted. The Results of that request are here on the GBHL Blog

On now to our next event, a lovely thematic tournament which sees pairs of players compete to win The Strider Cup with two forces allying together to make 1000pts. Coming out victorious were Kieran Hatton and Joshua Triffitt with their Harad and Corsairs force (no doubt an INSANE amount of shooting at 1000pts!), slightly behind them in second place was Bert Leach and Andrew Franklin. While Felix Newman and John Parish took both the bronze trophy AND most sporting.

Finally, during the same weekend, Cardiff once again saw battle return to its shores. In another doubles tournament Danny Hawkins and David Clubley reigned supreme with a sickening army featuring Goblin Town, The Spider Queen... and Bill the Troll?! Coming in Second after a tight top table match were Rhys Schanzer and Ryan Wood with their Rohirrim. Joshua Davies and John Jones took home bronze.

With that we come to another break. Later this week I'll have more info about how YOU can get involved in the committee which runs the GBHL. Are you a spreadsheet whizz? Do you like Scrutinising Rulespackes? Have you got some stellar ideas for how we could better promote the league? We'll be voting on comittee members to decide on all these things - as well as the boss of the league - this month. If that intrigues, you, keep an eye on the blog here and we'll have more info!

And remember, this hobby is a source of great goodness in many ways… Let it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.
